From Davos: Aliyev Reaffirms His Ongoing War against the Rules-Based Order
President Ilham Aliyev, in his interview with Euronews today, declared that Azerbaijan has ceased all forms of cooperation with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) and the European Parliament. He emphasised that engagement with the European Commission suffices for Azerbaijan’s purposes.
This unequivocal position articulated at the highest level of the Azerbaijani government underscores a clear intent to perpetuate autocratic rule, intensify the systematic suppression of independent civil society and political opposition, and advance what amounts to a deliberate policy of incremental politicide. Such statements further signal an ongoing assault on the rule-based international order.
It is readily apparent from President Aliyev’s remarks that the European Commission, through its continued trade and energy-focused engagement, has assumed a posture of silent complicity, thereby enabling these developments. We call upon the European Commission to cease this complicity and to employ all instruments at its disposal to counter the Azerbaijani government’s challenge to the rule-based international order. It is essential that the Commission uphold core European values and give full effect to the relevant resolutions of the European Parliament on Azerbaijan, including the resolution adopted in December 2025.
