Statement by the Chairman of ASIMKOM on the Killing of Civilians in Kryvyi Rih

We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the horrific attack in Kryvyi Rih.

The attack carried out by Russian forces against an area where civilians were gathered in the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, resulting in the deaths and injuries of numerous people, including children, constitutes a grave crime against humanity. The continuation of the attack while rescue operations were underway makes the tragedy particularly horrifying.

We deeply regret that, as a result of the intensifying military aggression and war crimes of Putin’s Russia, which have continued for more than five years, the number of human casualties in Ukraine continues to rise, while the threat to the lives of civilians is growing ever greater. During this period, thousands of innocent people have lost their lives, while millions have been forced to flee their homes.

The targeting of civilians, children and rescue workers cannot be justified by any military or political objective. The protection of civilians is a fundamental requirement of international humanitarian law. The actions of those who deliberately violate these principles must be investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable under international law.

The Azerbaijani people have also experienced the pain of war, occupation and the targeting of civilians for many years. We therefore particularly understand the pain and loss experienced by the Ukrainian people during these difficult times.

On behalf of ASIMKOM, we pay tribute to the memory of those who lost their lives in Kryvyi Rih, wish a speedy recovery to those injured, and express our solidarity with the people of Ukraine and the families of the victims.

We call on democratic countries and international legal institutions to document cases involving the targeting of civilians, identify all those responsible for these crimes, and ensure that they are held accountable under international law.

No political objective can justify the killing of civilians.
